Welt in Aufruhr in the Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. In 3 chapters with texts by Marc Chagall, among others, themes of the exhibition, such as flight, migration, antisemitism and homeland, are taken up and deepened. Inspired by the symmetrical movement of breaststroke, the pages can be opened from the center outwards. The text poetically describes the relationship between body, space, and mind while swimming. The text strips are arranged in a helix shape and imitate water waves through their rotation. The illustrations in the first part of the book depict the movement sequences of a body while swimming in abstract form. In the second section, the waves form a head. In the 1990s, Kenji Kawakami established the production and staging of ‘Chindōgus’ as an art form in Japan. The idea was to use these objects to ironically hold up a mirror to consumer society and its obsession with optimisation. My book ‘Chindōgu Nails’ is a gel nails catalogue that contains 5 different sets (Cutlery, Beauty, Craft, Office and Outdoor). The nails are each shown in their application and on the back in detail with different designs. I based the shape of the book on nail fans, which are often found in nail salons. The book was presented in the group exhibition ‘Shin-Chindōgu’, which was on show at the Design Festa Gallery in Tokyo from 25-27 November 2024. You enter the installation by walking through four layers of fabric panels. An animation of the illustrations from the book is projected onto the fabric panels as a loop. Only a small gap in the middle of the fabric panels allows a glimpse of the room behind. To pass through the fabric panels, one must perform a movement similar to breaststroke swimming. As with the book, the installation is intended to be experienced not only visually but also haptically. In the room behind, the book is presented on a stretched fabric surface. The presentation form picks up on the feeling of floating and swaying while swimming.
