Impulse, book, installation, animation, 2025

‘Impulse’ translates the physical and mental sensations of swimming into book form. Inspired by the symmetrical movement of breaststroke, the pages can be opened from the center outwards. The text poetically describes the relationship between body, space, and mind while swimming. The text strips are arranged in a helix shape and imitate water waves through their rotation. The illustrations in the first part of the book depict the movement sequences of a body while swimming in abstract form. In the second section, the waves form a head. This second section also describes, on a textual level, the transition to the meditative state of mind that arises in the course of swimming.
In the surrounding room installation, the book is deconstructed in its form. You enter the installation by walking through four layers of fabric panels. An animation of the illustrations from the book is projected onto the fabric panels as a loop. Only a small gap in the middle of the fabric panels allows a glimpse of the room behind. To pass through the fabric panels, one must perform a movement similar to breaststroke swimming. As with the book, the installation is intended to be experienced not only visually but also haptically. In the room behind, the book is presented on a stretched fabric surface. The presentation form picks up on the feeling of floating and swaying while swimming. Between the fabric panels and the book hang two narrow vertical fabric panels, which, as in the book, are printed with two quotations on both sides.
